A Beautiful October Morning

Dona and I had a chance to run up to the cabin during her fall break to catch the tail end of some spectacular color.  Dona has always liked to fish particularly from the pier at the seashore, but this fall I bought Dona her first pair of waders, which was a new fishing sensation for her.  We went up river to a pretty nice place where we could get into the Williams River for a little light fishing.  She loved it.  Earlier this fall we walked around the neighborhood to break in her new hiking boots and on our second day we drove up over Red Oak Mountain to the Cranberry Back Country Gate, parked, and walked in about three miles behind the gate along the river.

To get to the Cranberry River and the entry into the back country drive from the cabin down-river 2.8 miles to where the “Low Water Bridge” crosses The Williams River and where the forest service road heads up over the mountain.  From the bridge it is 7.4 miles up over the mountain and down to the parking lot at the gate that stops motorized vehicles from entering the back country .  The forest service road behind the gate provides easy and safe access for hiking or biking along the Cranberry River.

Note that there are handicap accessible outdoor style toilet houses near the parking lot.  Remember to take towelettes as there is no running water available.

The eleven photographs below with give you an idea of what the cabin is like.  There are other photographs on other pages regarding the cabin and the river.  Our cabin is about 6 miles to the East of Cowen, West Virginia 26206 on Williams River Road, which parallels the river within the boundaries of the Monongahela National Forest.  The cabin sleeps 4.  There is a queen size bed on the loft and a queen size sleeper  inside a custom built red leather sofa.  The bathroom has a 42″ wide jacuzzi spa tub with shower head.  The cabin has red oak hardwood and ceramic tile floors.  There is a large deck with a gas grill and a six person spa.  The porch is screened for pleasent relaxation without the insects.  We allow small dogs.

The cabin is an excellent honeymoon cottage.  It is a great place to spend time together as you once did; particularly if you and your spouse have a taste for the outdoors.

Take all your toys.  The hunting, fishing, hiking, biking, and boating opportunities are nearly limitless.  The cabin is located in the heart of White Water Heaven West Virginia.  Access to Shoeshoe by the way of the forest routes and the scenic highway is an easy drive.

Though there is no cable access there is a DVD player and a screen to play your favorite movies and a sterio CD player for your favorite music.

We are happy to have our cabin finished, but our timing could have been better. Most people including us planned their vacation and made reservations several months ago for this summer. However, we have high hopes of generating some rental opportunities with people who have flexible plans, or those who can on the spur of the moment quickly plan a long weekend.

The cabin is finished and it’s ready for people to come and enjoy the beautiful mountains of West Virginia. Whether you like to hunt, fish or just sit in a hot tub this is the cabin for you! Check out the latest photos of the cabin:

By God’s grace we have finally arrived at the end of construction!  We just made a run up to the cabin and it is about done. We are going back up to WVa in a week in order to put the finishing touches and set up the cabin for guests. We officially open June 1st and are now taking reservations. April 16, 2009.  We are almost ready to use our cabin and to be able to rent it out.  You can call David for details and the phone number is to the right.  The construction of our cabin continues and proceeds at a much slower pace than we would have ever thought, but the quality of the construction is there.  I guess the old saying “good things come to those who wait” may be true in this case.  We are sorry for the hold up to the hunters that have expressed an interest and those who have wanted to rent the cabin for this season.  The good news is that we have not written off late winter and early spring fishing. 

My family has had high hopes of being in the cabin for Thanksgiving.  My boys have never deer hunted in West Virginia, and this would be the first time for them.  I have not deer hunted in West Virginia since the early 70’s.  We have not spent Thanksgiving in West Virginia since about 1985.  You can hardly imagine our disappointment.

We also intended by this fall to start building another cabin on the same lot, which will be much larger.  We wanted to have the foundation done this month so that we would be up out of all the soft ground and mud we encountered this spring in the construction of this cabin.  We would have framed it during the winter and been ready to go by summer.  Does anyone have past experiences with proceeding with shell construction of cabins during the winter months in West Virginia?

Regardless of our plans and what in our minds seems to be a setback we look toward our God, King and Savior for guidance.  We trust that God has a better plan than ours, and we will be content with his pace.

The Cabin is looking amazing!  As far as construction is concerned, it is already dried in, so all the glass and doors are in.  The deck is built and it has a 6 person hot tub on it.

We have some pictures, but I have yet to pull them off the camera.  Check back for some more updates.  It looks like it will be done in perfect timing for the fall season.
